Top Ten Stories in 2008
The election of Senator Barrack Obama on November 4, 2008 as the first black-American President of America has been adjudged the most important news event of 2008 in the yearly survey of the Top Ten Stories by Top Ten Editors conducted by Media Review. This is the second time a foreign event would be picked as the most significant story of the year since the exercise began eight years ago. The first was the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001.
The yearly survey, which began in 2001, provides an insight into the news judgment of Nigerian editors and tries to identify areas of convergence and points of departure.

We’d have released Bitter-Sweet with Obasanjo still in office, says Idowu
Mr. Lanre Idowu, journalist and Managing Director of Diamond Publications Ltd, published the book, Bitter-Sweet: My life with Obasanjo written by Mrs. Oluremi Obasanjo. For several hours, Idowu answered very intriguing questions on why and how he published the book. He revealed behind the scene moves during the process of publication, how he met Mrs. Obasanjo and insisted that the book would have been published with Obasanjo still in Office had been it was ready. Published in The Guardian , March 30, 2009.
As the publisher of Bitter-Sweet: My life with Obasanjo, what spurred you to get involved in the publication of the books?
Well, an older friend of mine mentioned to me that Mrs. Oluremi Obasanjo was interested in publishing a book on her life and as it relates to General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd). My initial reaction was, what does she want to tell us about General Olusegun Obasanjo? And so, my older friend asked, would you be interested in publishing the book?. And l said, why not! So, we arranged to have a meeting with Mrs. Obasanjo. We went there. I was not sure that day whether it was going to be a project that we were going to do. More or less, it was a visit, to feel her out.

DBN was one TV station that made the Lagos waves in the early 90's when the broadcast industry was deregulated and private stations started beaming their signals. Just as it appeared to be building up a good viewership, the station went off air in a cloud of rumours. Things are, however, looking up again. Clearer signals are beaming. Chairman/CEO DBN, Sunny Osa Adun explains to Alaba Ladeinde:
Obviously, in the broadcast industry, DBN is not a new name, but the big question is, for a long period of time, we have not heard about DBN, what has been the problem?

The Missing Click
First Babies, Mothers & First Ladies
Colour photographs of female twins born at 00.01 and 00.02am at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Marina, Lagos, appropriately graced the front pages of the Vanguard and the Punch newspapers on Friday, January 2, 2009. The Vanguard photograph is credited to Kehinde Gbadamosi; while the Punch photograph, which incidentally looks very identical to that in the Vanguard, is unaccredited. Interestingly, the photographer, Gbadamosi, from his first name, Kehinde, is himself a twin according to Yoruba custom and tradition. What a lovely coincidence!
Predictably, there were also other photographs of the first babies of the year from the different States of Nigeria, in both of these same editions of the Vanguard and Punch newspapers and, many of these historic photographs, sadly, had the important news-making individuals missing. These, are the mothers of the news-making babies!...| Read more

MEDIA WORLD YEAR BOOK ADVERT RATE |

Sylva and journalist's abduction
The recent abduction of the Abuja Bureau Chief of National Life, Mr. Akin Orimolade, at the behest of the Bayelsa Government, is another unwarranted assault on human rights and press freedom.
After days of anxiety, he surfaced at the premises of a court on the outskirts of the state capital. Recounting his ordeal, the journalist said; “I was arrested at the City Plaza. They brought tear gas and bundled me into a car. Even in the vehicle, they held me as if I wanted to abscond”. He said he had been confined in the circle of criminals.
