The passage of Babatunde JOSE
The media attention being paid to the passage of Alhaji Is'mail Babatunde Jose, OFR since August 3 typifies the saying made popular by Calpurnia, Caesar's wife in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, that "when beggars die there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes."
The spontaneous outpouring of love for the deceased, the quick rally round his family by friends and professional associates and the eulogies in the media all convey a sense of loss of a well regarded prince, who impacted greatly on his territory. Jose was truly a prince in the newsroom and boardroom, his household and the mosque; and he was a prince at occupying public consciousness many years after rendering active public service to the nation.
Jose's life was the classic story of converting adversity to prosperity and indigence to affluence. Born in central Lagos, he spent his early years in Port Harcourt and Lagos, where his father, a 1914 King's College Lagos graduate, was a prosperous trader with six shops. Young Jose had ten years of formal education, which was abruptly terminated in 1941 following a global economic recession, occasioned by World War II, which cost his father five of his six shops. Left with only one and unable to collect rent from tenants in his Yaba home, Jose's father allowed his son to drop out of school to "learn a trade.".. | Read more

Reporting the Capital Market meltdown Judging by media reports, one is tempted to believe that the end has come for what had been described as the most lucrative stock market in the world in terms of returns on equity: the Nigerian Stock market. The Stock Exchange, which had been a source of easy money for speculators was, and still is, going through a lean period.
Understandably, because of the strategic importance of the Bourse to the Nigerian economy, there has been trepidation even among the press corps reporting the capital market. And for once, nobody could deny that the media, electronic and print, devotes quality airtime and space to reporting the downward trend in the stock market. ..| Read more

The Author and the Book
Oluremi Obasanjo was born in Abeokuta where she received her primary and secondary school education. She later studied Institutional Management in England before embarking on a rewarding career in the hospitality industry.
Bitter-Sweet: My life with Obasanjo, is the engaging story of a green-eyed Abeokuta girl, who married a soldier and witnessed the extreme realities of tender love and brutal nonchalance, of dedication and indifference. It is the story of a wife and mother, a participant-observer who “witnessed many things about the nature of power—its allure, use and misuse.”

Ambassador Christopher Kolade in Britain The place of the book will be better appreciated if experiences of Nigerians andz my personal experiences in Britain are juxtaposed with the contents of the book.
I was in London for the 5th World Public Relations Conference and Festival, which held between June 23 to 24. As a Nigerian who arrived Britain with his family, I was eager to get to the Nigerian High Commission. The first Nigerian I met on arrival discouraged me from visiting the High Commission saying, he would have encouraged me when Dr. Kolade was still the High Commissioner. He said Dr. Kolade sanitised the place and since he left, the place has not been the same again...| Read more
