Projecting Yar'Adua and His Government
There are a lot of differences in the policy thrust of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and his predecessor, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Although, the former in his inaugural speech on May 29, after being sworn in as President said, “We are not starting from the scratch”, which suggested some inheritance from the outgone regime, he has on occasions jettisoned and departed from policies of the latter.
One noticeable departure as it concerns the media was the appointment of individuals that would manage the information machinery of government. While Obasanjo created different portfolios for his communications with the media and public, with separate assistants handling each, President Yar'Adua has settled for only an individual to handle all aspect of his communications. Named Special Adviser on Communications, he has also appointed two Ministers for the Information and Communication Ministry. The sub or copy desk in any media organization the world over occupies a very important place in the news processing chain. Literally, it is the life-blood of any news medium. While the reporter is known to be the supplier of the news ideas, the sub-editor, as the beholder of the desk, mostly serves as the cook, who ensures that the news delicacy is of good taste to the consumers of the news content.
By the virtue of their jobs, it may not be wrong to refer to sub editors as a special breed of journalists. LASAA, OAAN crisis deepens
The disagreement over the control of outdoor business in Lagos between the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria OAAN) and Lagos Signage and Advertising Agency (LASAA) may not be resolved very soon as the latter has stepped up the demolition of billboards it considered illegally……. This has, however, not gone down well with OAAN, which Felt LASSA had breached the peace brokered between the two bodies
OAAN's vice president, Mr. Yinka Adepoju, described the current demolition exercise as sad saying his association has been trying to avoid possible collision with the state government over the control of outdoor business in state. Improving Public Relations practice in Nigeria
A Public Relations conference which sought to address PR challenges in contemporary Nigeria was held recently in Golden Gate Restaurant, Ikoyi with speakers drawn from within and outside the country. Prominent amongst them were Nicholas Van Zanten, head of Europe's biggest PR training company, Meet The Press, Nn'emeka Maduegbuna, CEO, C & F Porter Novelli, Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, MD, CMC Connect, and three other distinguished speakers.
The conference with the theme, “The Changing Face of Public Relations Practice in Nigeria,” attracted many PR practitioners and sections of the public mainly drawn from the media.
