Crisis mismanaged
For five months, Mrs. Patricia Etteh dominated the media scene. Her emergence as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the first woman to occupy such position in the history of Nigeria, and the scandal involving the renovation of her residence and that of her deputy, Babangida Nguroje, generated waves that reverberated on the pages of newspapers.
Etteh was accused by her colleagues of appropriating a hefty sum of N628million to furnish her house and that of her deputy and buy a fleet of cars for herself and principal officers. In her defence, Etteh said she was the victim of a vendetta by veteran members who are angry because she did not name them chairmen of the House committees they coveted, instead choosing first-term legislators.

Alade Odunewu at 80
As the Holy Book enjoins us to honour our fathers and mothers so that our days may be long on earth, we pay tribute to a distinguished father of Nigerian journalism and an accomplished Nigerian. We pay tribute to Hadj Alade Odunewu, OFR, fnge, informed commentator and acclaimed 'dean of satirical journalism'. We salute a fine gentleman, and a leading light of the drive to enhance media professionalism as an integral part of nation building. At 80, thus November 20.
The drums are already being rolled. Newspaper interviews, feature articles are being published. Prayers are being offered. Editorials will be written. A book launch has been fixed. A party is to follow. All for a man, who seems to find it so easy to relate with all.

KUDOS & KNOCKS
Kudos to The Guardian for the expressive photograph on its back page of September 27, showing the statue of Late Tai Solarin at the Yaba bus-stop overwhelmed by refuse. Taken by Taiwo Oni, the picture, carefully captioned, “the labour of our heroes past shall never end up in dust bin”, conveyed a message of how not to honour those who had laboured hard for what the country is today. One hopes the relevant authorities saw the picture and would clear the debris and allow the statue continue to be a landmark monument. ...| Read more

Wife or Mistress ?
An architect, an artist and a journalist were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship.
The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there. The journalist said, "I like both." "Both?" Journalist: "Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can stay long in the newsroom and get some work done."

'Rite it Right'
...For Correct And Consistent Correlatives
Written fully, the title would have read, “Be a Stickler for Correct and Consistent Correlatives.” Good writing demands strict observance of sundry principles, one of which is paying attention to the fine points of grammar. And one fine point of grammar which many do not seem to pay enough attention to because it belongs to what we may call the minutiae of writing is the correlative phrase.
A correlative phrase, or correlative, for short, is a group of words that are regularly coupled with each other. Most correlative phrases are indeed correlative conjunctions. Examples include either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also, and whether…or. One common correlative phrase that is not a correlative conjunction is range from…to.
